Crafty Giveaways:
I'm sure those of you who are crafty know about the Fall into Fall giveaways going on until 10/15, but if not, be sure to check them out. Because they've received so much attention (and because most of them will get too many entries for me to be motivated to enter them), I won't post them all here. However, here are a few highlights from the sewing and quilting blogosphere this week:
Riverside Stitching
Spun Sugar Quilts
Lucky Duck Dreams
Sew Scrumptious
Talk About Fabric
As a side note, I have a small rant. If your giveaway requires a purchase or donation in exchange for entries (or if a purchase improves your chances of winning, even if there are other ways to gain entries that don't require a purchase), it isn't a giveaway. It's an illegal lottery. It is prohibited pretty much everywhere. You are basically running numbers using your website or blog. Don't believe me? Look it up. This is true even if you are trying to raise money for your sick relative's chemotherapy or your adoption expenses. If you want to have a raffle to raise money for your own personal charitable cause, contact a local church or non-profit agency; they are generally allowed to run such contests, and you are not. If you have no beneficent motive and are simply trying to drive traffic to your shop, then just knock it off. And if you see someone else doing this, it'd be nice if you let them (or PayPal, if applicable) know that they are doing something wrong. (The preceding rant is based on laws generally applicable in the United States; many other countries have even more stringent laws, however. This is why so many sweepstakes are limited to U.S. residents only. Another option would be to have a contest with a skill requirement and an entry fee, e.g., a poetry contest in which the best poem is chosen, but that sort of thing is best done if you have a lawyer on retainer.)
